Joy! Tchaikovsky, Bach, and Dvorak

A program of beloved music on a Sunday afternoon! Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 is a collection of popular dance forms such as the Sarabande, the Bourée, and Minuet, alongside musical forms such as the French Overture, the Polonaise, and the Badinerie (a scherzo that is a showpiece for the flute). Dvořák was inspired after hearing one of Mozart’s Wind Serenades to compose one of his own and Johannes Brahms liked it enough to award him a prize. The concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s lovely Andante cantabile, a glorious work for luscious string orchestra.
