Bach’s Favorite Coffeehouse

Zimmerman’s Coffee House — the inspiration for Bach’s Coffee Cantata. A Discover Baroque session by Artistic Director Frank Nowell, via Zoom.

In the cosmopolitan trade city of Leipzig people often gathered for coffee and great music (directed by JS Bach) at Cafe Zimmerman. Some of Bach’s most enduring and beloved instrumental works, as well as his comic “Coffee Cantata,” received their first performances in the intimate surroundings of Zimmerman’s coffee house. Learn more about this unusual venue and some of the music that was performed there. This is the perfect prelude to our performance of the Coffee Cantata on March 20!
