*Jordan is the 2020 winner of the Composition Competition in collaboration with the Composition Department at the College of Music at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Appalachian Spring, the ballet, was commissioned by the legendary choreographer and dancer, Martha Graham, with a grant from the Coolidge Foundation, the set was designed by the American artist Isamu Noguchi, and was premiered at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on October 30, 1944. For this work, Aaron Copland was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1945. The work includes the tune and radiant variations on the Shaker hymn, Simple Gifts. Fun fact: The orchestra pit at the Library of Congress could only hold 13 players, and so we have this gem of the chamber orchestra repertoire.
